RACING PIGEON POST
An interview with Thorsten Daum
FCI World Champion 2009-2010
Between the 23rd and 25th of September 2011, Dyllan Debord from Pigeon Vitality took his journalist hat for a couple of days and accepted the invitation of Thorsten Daum in Germany to visit his loft, talk about his pigeons, his experience, his passion.
DD: ‘Thorsten, in your own basic experience in the sport, give me 4 fundamental tips for a flyer that wants to start the best way possible’.
TD: 1- You must be ready to work the whole year in your loft, keeping contact with your pigeons. It is obvious for me to spend as much time as possible in the loft to create a strong bonding to raise motivation where it is needed. You must do your best to do that on your own, pigeons do not need confusion;
2- When you acquire a pigeon, for racing or breeding, you must be sure that they come from a strong racing & breeding family too. Breeding only may not be enough;
3- Do not copy 100% the training, feeding, bonding and racing system you may see somewhere from someone. Your geographical environment together with natural weather conditions may completely false the hard work you want to build. Instead, take in consideration these two factors and build from it your own systems;
4- Take the time to plan. Make sure you schedule well all steps in your loft to get all your pigeons ready on time. The quality will show immediately if you do that the right way, this may have an effect for the future of your loft, and your future results.
DD: ‘What has been the biggest disappointment for you in the sport?’.
TD: ‘For many years, some local organizations have not been keen on handling pigeons the right way in local races. Let me clarify, for me, releasing pigeons near high hills, or in any type of weather conditions, while changing directions every now and then is the worse to do. I have lost in the past some of the most valuable pigeons, which made me few times angry.’
DD: ‘What about your biggest satisfaction in the sport?, that completely took you by surprise’.
TD: ‘Without a doubt, my 3rd position at the Million Dollar Race in South Africa, It was the final race and I was waiting for the arrival of the pigeons with other fanciers. We were refreshing ourselves, talking to each other when the 1st and 2nd bird arrived. A short time after I was just seating in the back looking at my sandwich, when a man turned and screamed at me: ‘YOU!!!!’. This is when I realized that what this man meant was a ‘BIG BANG’ chock to me; it was my bird taking third place! I immediately had a thought for my grand-father who introduced me to the sport of Racing Pigeons’.

A relax interview, by a good weather day.
DD: ‘How do you compare the pigeon fanciers of Germany compared to the Belgian, Dutch and British?’.
TD: ‘I can tell you that we work as hard. We have for the old pigeons a 14 weeks of hard and intense racing schedule; we make them perform in all distances no matter. For the young birds planned for One Loft Races, I pay attention to their adaptability to their new location in the loft, the faster they adapt the highest the quality and results will be.
DD: ‘What is your profession besides the pigeon sport?’.
TD: ‘I am a Sales-Consultant in a communication company making voice application for the industrial company in my district, this is my main job’.
DD: ‘Tell me, do you have more project for your loft in the coming weeks-months?.
TD: ‘Yes, it is good that you ask. I am going to start again with my old club and build a new team of breeders and racers. 90% of them will be birds from 2011. I will as well improve my system by adding the newest products of Pigeon Vitality to the existing one I have. Not to forget, for my coming trips, I will meet key contact and sell them exclusively my best pigeons with fantastic flying records and unique breeding performance.
Interview taken in Thorsten Cottage house.
